Activities

1. Library Activities

Library activities are carried out on a termly basis. Various follow-up activities such as drawing of book jackets, solving jigsaw puzzles, role-play and writing about their favourite story book character are done by pupils after the story-telling sessions carried out by teachers or parent volunteers.

2. Reading Programme

The implementation of the reading card helped pupils to select books suitable for their classes. There was an increase in the borrowing of Tamil storybooks in semester 1 for P3 to P6. Some pupils have shown improvement in their reading skills. Pupils who have written the targeted number of book reviews will receive the Super Reader Award and also token prizes.

3. Purchasing and Reading of Maanavar Murasu

Maanavar Murasu is purchased by P3 to P6 Tamil pupils using their Edusave Funds. Interesting articles and stories motivate pupils to read. Oral book reviews and sharing of interesting articles were done by pupils at least once fortnightly. 

P4 Cultural Camp

The P4 pupils were exposed to various activities related to the Tamil language and culture during the half day camp which was conducted during the first week of the June holidays. Pupils enjoyed participating in activities such as designing rangoli and traditional costumes. They also got to enjoy traditionally served banana leaf meal.

Language Fiesta

In Term 3 each year, the Tamil Department conducts various fun-filled activities to encourage the active use of the Tamil Language. Pupils are given the opportunity to learn more about the Tamil language and culture. Activities such as designing Kolam, Show & Tell, Dialogue Creation, Innovation & Enterprise and Character Portrayal were carried out in 2014. The activities gave opportunities for pupils to improve on their spoken Tamil and Language skills.

Pongal Celebrations at a Campbell Lane

P4 and P5 Tamil pupils were brought to Campbell Lane to learn more about the Pongal Festival. Pupils got the opportunity to see exhibits such as cows, goats, farming equipments and the ingredients for the cooking of Pongal rice. Through this learning journey, pupils had a better understanding of the festival. Pupils also had the opportunity to wear traditional outfits and participate in various activities.
