Key Events and Activities

The department has various Instructional Programmes for pupils to develop and acquire skills for the 21st Century and learn Science through inquiry. Apart from the Science textbooks and activity books, pupils’ learning will be further enhanced through topical concept maps, concept cartoons, topical process skills worksheets, topical assessments and reflections which serve as useful formative assessment tools of students’ learning.

Science 1.jpgAs we believe in taking learning beyond the classroom, the department organised experiential learning through field-based learning journeys (FBLJ) and science lessons at the Singapore Science Centre (SSC) as well as holding yearly Science magazines subscription drive at the beginning of the year. These are to allow students to explore the wondrous world of Science beyond the primary school syllabus through reading and other learning resources and experiences.

In line with the MOE initiatives of Teach Less Learn More (TLLM), science lessons were conducted based on the 5E Instructional Model to structure and plan inquiry-based science lessons. The 5Es are Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate/Extend and Evaluate. This guides the pupils to move from concrete experiences to the development of understanding of concepts and the application of concepts. The learning of science as inquiry is supported through the meaningful use of physical facilities, resources and ICT.

Students are encouraged to

  • ask questions about information and issues pertaining to their daily lives,
  • society and the environment.
  • be actively engaged in collecting data and the use of evidence
  • formulate and communicate explanations based on scientific knowledge

Experiential Learning through FBLJ and lessons @ Singapore Science Centre (SSC)

To extend their learning in Science, pupils went for FBLJ that allows learning to take place through meaningful science experiences. For example,  the P3 pupils went to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and the P4 pupils to Maritime Museum.  All P4 and P5 pupils attended the enrichment lesson at the Singapore Science Centre to have in-depth hands-on lessons that complement the topics in the syllabus. 

P3 and P4 Interdisciplinary Project Work 

Through Interdisciplinary Project Work (IPW) pupils have the opportunity to synthesize knowledge across subjects. They acquire skills like independent learning, collaboration and communication skills that will prepare them for lifelong learning and the challenges ahead. 

Science Practical Assessment (SPA)

The P3 to P5 pupils sat for their Science Practical Assessment which integrates process skills learnt e.g. observing, classifying, communicating & measuring. The objective of this assessment is to sharpen the process skills of the pupils as this is essential to understanding the science concepts around them. This assessment constitutes 5% of SA1 marks for P3 and P4 and 5% of CA2 marks for P5.

P4 My Garden Project

This is an experiential programme where pupils have the opportunity to grow and harvest their own vegetables at the designated plots in school. They observe the plant growth and gain deeper understanding of the life cycle of a flowering plant. Pupils also learnt the importance of plants in protecting the environment against the threat of Global Warming.

Green Movement @ Evergreen Primary School

This is the department effort to get the  pupils to gain a better understanding of the environmental impact of their actions in school and at home. Pupils participate in various environmental programmes and level activities such as waste minimisation, resource conservation, and greening of the school grounds. Pupils are also encouraged to take greater ownership in their environmental activities and management. 

P2 Science Camp

In conjunction with the year-end activities, the primary 2 students will be introduced to science concepts with help from the primary 6.
The objectives are:

  • students can relate prior knowledge to basic science concepts
  • creating awareness and interest in Science
  • Promote the discovery of science through hands-on learning

Science Trail @ Science Eco-garden

Pupils are introduced to the rich flora and fauna in the school eco-garden. They learn the life cycles of the plants and animals, plants uses and the relationship between plants, animals and the environment.
